The Runaway Latkes by Leslie Kimmelman. (Selinger & Tauber Libraries E Chanukah Kim) An adaption of the Gingerbread Man story to be used for Hanukah, this book has rhyming phrases and suspense as the latkes run away. The pastel illustrations of a contemporary family are exceptional without too much detail thereby allowing the child to use his imagination to fill in the pictures.
Lots of Latkes: A Hanukkah Story by Sandy Lanton and illustrated by Vicki Jo Redenbaugh. (Selinger & Tauber Libraries E Chanukah Lan) Another story about latkes (everyone loves latkes), this book is entertaining and charming with illustrations that reflect Eastern European shtetl life. The story reinforces the joy of celebrating Hanukah by gathering with family and friends.
Sammy Spiders First Hanukkah by Sylvia A. Rouss and illustrated by Katherine Janus Kahn. (Selinger & Tauber Libraries E Chanukah Rou) The children are captivated by the adventures of Sammy Spider, and this delightful book teaches about celebrating the holiday while at the same time teaching the names of colors. One of my favorite lines from the book is, “Spiders don’t spin dreidels. Spiders spin webs.”
Sammy Spider’s First Trip to Israel by Sylvia A. Rouss. (Selinger & Tauber Libraries E Israel Rou) This is my own favorite of the Sammy Spider series. Sammy sneaks on to an airplane and travels to Israel. You are introduced to the sights of Israel and get a good laugh, at the same time, thinking of Sammy’s cleverness.
